The summer of 2017 had come and gone. Tyler and I had done the work on the farms, sweated through hot days to keep mineral sites going, studied patterns, and picked out our target bucks for the upcoming fall. We’d dedicated ourselves to the process of creating a perfect archery season in Central PA, and our mentality was, “Shoot a stud, or bust.”
Within the first week, Tyler and I had both punched doe tags, just like we’d hoped. Now it was time to pursue a handful of different bucks we picked out of the thousands of pictures we’d gotten over multiple months’ time. Hunts went by, days turned into weeks, and pretty soon we were approaching the last week of the season. Sure we’d had some good sits, but it just hadn’t come together yet. It didn’t take long before we felt the pressure of the hunts winding down, and we started to press. The hunts became stressful, and it seemed like the harder we tried to turn it all around, the worse it got.
As I reflect on how the season went, I realize our mistake. Instead of enjoying the beauty that surrounded us, we became caught up in ourselves. We took the joy and beauty out of something we loved, because of pride; it was all about us. All hunters have experienced it, and in fact, all people have gone through it. It’s in our human nature to make situations all about us, and try to take things on our own shoulders, even when it’s a fight we can’t win.
Exodus 14:14 says, “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” As a prideful people, this is so hard for us. So often we say, “God, you want me to just sit back and trust you? I can fix this myself.”, when most times, we can’t. Regardless of what situation we find ourselves in, no matter who has abandoned us, or how many times we’ve failed, God will fight for us.
There are days that we find ourselves panicking or stressed that we can’t make things go the right way, and most times the truth is, we won’t be able to. Take time, step back, and talk to God. Put whatever struggles you may be going through in His hands, and trust that he will fight for you. There is no time constraint on his faithfulness; there is no boundary on His love. Every day, we have the creator of the universe on our side, and all we have to do is find peace in Him.
